PITTSBURGH (AP) — U.S. prosecutors and financial regulators say a subsidiary of Alcoa Inc. will plead guilty and pay $384 million for paying bribes to the Middle Eastern Kingdom of Bahrain through a London-based middleman.
Alcoa released a statement confirming the guilty plea by Alcoa World Alumina LLC.
The subsidiary's officials will plead guilty in Pittsburgh on Thursday. Alcoa says it is not being charged and continues to cooperate with investigators.
The criminal charges are related to a lawsuit filed by Aluminum Bahrain BSC, also known as Alba.
Alba contends Alcoa affiliates bribed Bahrain officials and Alba executives, resulting in Alba overpaying for raw materials.
Alcoa will pay a $209 million fine and forfeit $14 million under a Justice Department settlement. A parallel settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission will have Alcoa pay $161 million.
